WE ARE NOT MISTAKES | GLAAD
While working on a LGBTQ initiative at the office, I realized Microsoft was marking words I typed (terms commonly used within the LGBTQ community) as mistakes. I tested Google and Apple programs and sure enough the same thing happened. This made a profound impression on me. Tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Apple have tremendous influence on the way we think, communicate and grow as a people. I couldn’t help but wonder, how are these red underlines making people feel? And what are they subconsciously telling people?
To inspire these tech companies to update their dictionaries, we partnered with the LGBTQ organization GLAAD and wrote each of them letters with the “mistakes” untouched. To get our point across, we published the letters in local newspapers. We even extended the campaign out of home, targeting billboards and other high traffic locations next to each of their respective offices.
